I turn south at the isthmus
\nand move into the fog-laden peninsula
\nas I approach
\nscavenging rooks rise
\nfrom roadkill carcass
\ntrees grasp overhead as
\nthe road clambers onto the ridge
\nthe curlews call from below
\nalong the rock-strewn shoreline
\nwhile in single road villages
\nfuchsias flower on flat-topped walls
\nsparrow crowds cling
\nfeeding on pampas seed
\nand when they are no more
\nbeside the white pillar gate posts
\nmarshmallow roses bathe
\nin Virginia creeper claret.<\/p>\n
