past the water channel
\nthat marks the boundary
\nof the arrow-grass salt marsh
\nwe finally step out onto mudflats
\nthen awkwardly hop about
\nas we remove clumsy boots
\ntie \u00a0laces together
\nand hang them from our packs
\nthen roll our trousers above the knee
\nin preparation for the traverse
\ncautiously we move
\ntrying to avoid the glasswort
\nin case it is slippery seaweed
\ntowards where the poles
\npoint heavenwards
\nin an otherwise horizontal world
\nthe left behind causeway becomes
\njust a distant murmur of traffic
\ndrowned by the keening of seals
\nhidden in the light\u2019s vastness.<\/p>\n

sanderlings flicker-feed beside us
\na heron languidly flaps by
\nblack-backed gulls speed overhead
\nbetween blueness of sky
\nand its browned reflection in the sand
\nwe walk between masts that mark
\nthe safe route across this unveiled
\nsea-wilderness that stretches
\nthe horizon<\/p>\n

broken shells sharp against our feet
\nseagrassed mud-mires grasp our legs
\nfirm bottom runnels cool our calves
\nsoft sands ooze between our toes
\neach step a different experience
\neach step a repeat of all others
\na pole in front
\none behind
\nmesmerised
\nthere is no map
\nor sense of distance covered
\nonly the journey<\/p>\n

yet this too is finite
\neventually we come
\nto the point
\nwhere marram grass rises
\nabove sand-dune
\nand we reach landfall<\/p>\n
